Finding A Moisturizer For Acne Prone Skin

By Susan Sells

Acne is a problem that many people have to deal with. This problem is most common among those in their teen years, but acne is not an exclusive problem. It can continue to affect people well into their 50s.

In some strange cases, people who escaped the annoying problem in their teens may find themselves fighting a battle against acne in their 20s or 30s. You may want to revise what type of moisturizer you are using to see if it is helping or harming your skin.

You need to find a moisturizer for acne prone skin that won’t make the problem worse. There is no miracle product that works across the board for everyone. But there are factors to consider in choosing a good moisturizer for acne problems.

Moisturizer For Acne Prone SkinFirst, check the ingredients list of the moisturizer to see if it contains some type of oil. While acne prone skin does need to be moisturized, slathering on more oil on top of already oily skin is not the answer. Mineral oil and coconut oil are both known for causing breakouts in most people’s skin. Therefore, look for an oil-free moisturizer that is water-based.

If you see glycerin in the ingredient list, this can be a good thing since glycerin is a humectant. What is a humectant? A humectant is something that naturally draws moisture out of the air and into your skin. Also, look for ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. These are acne fighters that will help to keep your acne in check.

Some other words to look for on the label of your moisturizer are non-comedogenic or even non-acnegenic. These basically mean the same thing- that this moisturizer will not cause additional blackheads, whiteheads, or other type of acne.

A common mistake made in treating acne is to apply your moisturizer before applying your acne treatment cream. Do not fall into this bad habit.

Be sure to apply your moisturizer after you apply whatever acne treatment cream you use. This way, the lightweight acne treatment cream will sink deeper into your skin instead of being blocked by a heavier moisturizer. Remember, always apply products in order from lightest weight to heaviest weight.

In battling your acne, do not neglect to protect your skin from the sun by using a moisturizer with SPF. Besides being generally unhealthy for you, burned skin can actually aggravate acne problems. If you are going to the beach, be sure to wear additional protection instead of just relying on your everyday SPF moisturizer.

If you are one of the unfortunate people over 40 that has to deal with acne, be careful of using anti-aging products. Some of these products can be a double-edged sword for those also dealing with acne. This is because most anti-aging products are designed for the dry skin that the aging process normally brings.

Finally, it is good to know that natural products are not necessarily better than chemical ones. After knowing these tips on finding a moisturizer for acne prone skin, you should be able to head to the drugstore and start trying them out.
