How To Do Makeup For Hooded Eyes

By Susan Sells

When you meet someone for the first time or even if you’ve known them forever, when you are talking to someone, you look at their eyes first thing. It’s important for many of us to keep our eyes looking their very best.

As you age, your eyelids begin sagging and losing its elasticity. The upper part of your eyelid begins drooping onto the lower eyelid which results in what is know as the hooded eye. They will also start looking puffy and give you that tired look. So the way you apply your makeup has to change.

How To Do Makeup For Hooded EyesIt’s important to understand some basic techniques and things you should do differently, including using different eye makeup products now that you are getting older. You will want to experiment to find what works for you. But we have put together some basics to get you started.

Hooded Eye Makeup Tutorial

First you need to determine if you indeed have hooded eyes. Not every woman who gets older will deal with this right away.

Once you determine if your eyes are hooded, you need a nice matte eyeshadow pallette that has a good range of colors. Here is one that I recommend although you can use almost any kind that you like.

Makeup For Mature Hooded Eyes

As you begin to age, your skin changes and the way you apply makeup has to change as well. Hooded eyes are just one of the problems you may face but there are many other things you have to deal with such as uneven skin tone and thinner lips.

Eyeshadow Primer

Using eyeshadow primer is more important than ever as you get older. Simply dab it on your eyelid and work it around. It gives you a nice base to apply your eyeshadow. It also helps to keep your eyeshadow from not settling in the creases. It will also help it to last longer. Click the image below to check out a great eyeshadow primer.

Thank Me Later Primer

Use a nice soft brush. You should start using matte shadows because glossy eyeshadow or eyeshadow with glitter will accentuate your wrinkles.

Pick up a neutral color with the brush and blow off the excess. Use an up to down motion or dabbing motion instead of rubbing across as this will cause ridges to form giving your makeup a light/dark/light/dark striped appearance. Cover your entire eyelid all the up to the brow.

You will need a darker and medium shade now and need to create a shadow effect to give the illusion that the center of your lid is receding instead of laying on top of your lower lid.

Now the darkest shade can be applied with a harder tip brush. Apply in the crease and a little higher towards the outside corner of the eye and then angle toward the inside of the eye.

Use a bigger brush to blend all three shades.

Eyeliner

Use two shades of liner.

Add the lighter liner to the bottom water line and then a little below.

Using the darker liner, run it along the upper lash line pulling outward. It’s best to use a thin line instead of a thick one. You can use a liquid liner but you have to be careful that you don’t add it too thick. Now add it to the lower line but only the outer third. Never use liquid liner on the lower line. Here is a good pencil in brown. You can find just about any color here though.

Bare Minerals Lasting Line

Now you have to set the liner with a small brush with the medium colored shadow and go just around the lower edge of the liner, helping to help it set.

Mascara

Using an eyelash curler, grab your lashes and lift them up inside the curler.

Start with a light base coat, wiggling and pull it up starting from as close to the eyelid as you can. Because you have hooded eyes, you don’t want to open your eye completely until the mascara dries because it will go all over your eyelid and on the eyeshadow you just applied. Add as many coats as you want.

Brows

Be sure that you shape your brows. You can use a brow kit to get that perfect arched shape that you will want to use for hooded eyes.

If you make a brow line that is straight, you will actually draw more attention to the hooded eyes, so be sure to create an arch to give it the illusion of the eye lifting.

Makeup for Mature Skin

However, it all starts with your taking great care of your skin for a natural and glowing foundation to build on. We start developing fine lines and wrinkles and our skin tone starts looking uneven and blotchy.

Make sure you are using the correct type of foundation and makeup for your entire face.

When you use the wrong products, your skin will look patchy as the makeup settles into all those fine lines and creases.
