Use A Moisturizer That Is For Your Specific Skin Type
Many of the common skin complaints such as breakouts and irritation are caused by the wrong moisturizer. For dry skin, the best moisturizer is at thick cream with glycerin or hyaluronic acid, both of which draw in water. If the skin in oily, then try an oil-free lotion. If the skin is prone to break outs, a gel or lotion is better than a cream as long as it is noncomedogenic. This should be stated on the bottle. If the skin is sensitive, try a fragrance-free product.
Test Before Trying New Products
When trying new products without breaking out, try only one at a time. If a new product has an ingredient which may cause irritation such as alpha hydroxyl acids or retinol, don’t use anything else while testing the new product. Keep all other products very simple and basic. When testing a new product, test it on the neck instead of the face so any reaction may be covered with your hair. If the product is okay on the neck for at least three days, they try it on the face.
Sunscreen Is An Absolute Necessity
Always wear a sunscreen that is marked for ‘broad spectrum’ use, which means it fights both wrinkle and skin-cancer causing UVA and burning UVB rays. Also go with at least a daily 30 SPF and a 45 SPF when in the sun. Women rarely apply enough sunscreen to get the full SPF, so a higher SPF is a bit of extra insurance. If you apply sunscreen immediately after showering instead of applying lotion, then it is not forgotten. Just make sure to hit every spot, including the tops of the feet, backs of the hands, and crooks of the arms. Also, do not forget to coat your neck, earlobes, ears, and hairline. Take an antioxidant supplement on days when you’ll be outside for extended periods of time. This will punch up your sunscreen.
Treat Fine Lines
Dab on retinol lotion every night. If this causes irritation, dilute it with a basic moisturizer and put it on when the skin is completely dry. Use a glycolic acid peel every other night to speed up the cell turn over. This should be done at least thirty minutes before putting on the retinol. The two ingredients will deactivate each other otherwise.
Don’t Forget Your Lips
Any time you will be outside, apply a lip balm with at least SPF 30. Once you are back inside, put on a medicated balm.
Exfoliate
Clear your pores with a good exfoliating cleanser containing between .5 and 1% salicylic acid and use it every other day. Switch to a cream-based exfoliator once or twice per week.
Control Oily Skin
There are several options to help prevent skin from turning oily. Try using a mattifying moisturizer with SPF or a powder foundation. You can also try using oil-blotting sheets which can be used over makeup and will not smudge it.
Minimize Dark Circles Around Your Eyes
If your dark circles are genetic, try dabbing on an eye cream which contains a light diffuser and let it set for ten minutes. Choose a color that matches your skin tone. Otherwise, be sure to get the correct amount of sleep, be careful of your salt intake and check to see if you are allergic to certain foods which could be the of these cause dark circles.
