Skin lightening products which are also called skin brighteners, whiteners, bleaching creams and fading creams, reduce a pigment in the skin known as melanin. It’s most often used to treat acne scars, freckles, hormonal skin discolorations and age spots. It can also be used to lighten skin that is naturally dark.
You have to be careful though as there is some risk involved when using these types of skin lightening products. Always check the ingredients and understand exactly what the product does. Amazon has skin bleaching creams or you can get them prescribed by your doctor or dermatologist and you can buy them over the counter.
Some skin lighteners may contain mercury, which is a toxic agent which causes very serious neurological, psychiatric and kidney problems. A pregnant woman can also pass the mercury to her unborn child if the skin bleaching product she uses contains mercury. Mercury use in skin lighteners produced in the United States is banned but if you use something that has been made outside of the U.S., you may be at risk. Be very wary of any products made in Asia.
You should also be cautious of hydroquinone as there are safety concerns which, in a report by the Campaign For Safe Cosmetics, published that it may increase the risk of skin cancer. It can also lead to a darkening of the skin if it is used too much.
Of course, natural vitamins and other ingredients are best. Vitamin C is known to make the skin look more radiant and reduct the formation of malanin. Vitamin B3 is an anti-inflammatory and glycolic acid is a natural skin brightening agent. A highly recommended lightening cream is Meladerm by CIVANT.
Meladerm is a cream and it is one of the strongest lightening creams you can get without a prescription. It can safely be used on all skin types. Meladerm’s effectiveness comes from the use of the best natural skin lighteners available such as, Mulberry Extract, Licorice Extract, Kojic Acid, Vitamin C, Bearberry Extract, Sepiwhite and a few other lightening ingredients that comes from plants.
Meladerm also contains Lactic Acid which is a gentle exfoliant that will help the other ingredients penetrate more deeply. It contains no artificial fragrances or colors, no parabens and no oils which is perfect for skin that may be prone to breakouts.
If you are using any type of skin lightener, you must use sunscreen on a daily basis. You should gently exfoliate your skin daily to remove any dead skin, so that the lightening product penetrates the skin.
There are three different types of things that the ingredients of skin lighteners can do. There are melanin inhibitors, exfoliants and melanin killers. A melanin inhibitor works by interfering in the process of melanin production and inhibits the tyrosinase enzyme, which results in less melanin being produced, in turn, resulting in lighter skin.
An exfoliant clears away any dead skin cells on the surface of your skin. It doesn’t really do any type of whitening. Instead, exfoliating clears the way for any type of whitening ingredient to penetrate your skin. Think of it like a paint primer that helps the final paint color to stick to the wall better.
The last ingredient actually kills monobenzone, which is a melanocyte. This is one of the most dangerous lightening agents and should be avoided unless recommended by a doctor to treat vitiligo.
With this information, you can make the right decision and find a skin lightener that will actually work and not result in any further skin damage. A beautiful complexion can give your self-confidence a boost and help you to feel more beautiful, day in and day out.
